『Issues』は、KORNが、重く沈み込むギター、跳ねるベース、そして神経質なリズムを駆使し、深い孤立感や、激しい怒りを、色濃く描いた、充実の作品だ。前作『Follow the Leader』での、あの大きな成功を受け継ぎ、より内省的で、暗い方向へと踏み込んでいる。大きく力強い音圧の中にも、ささやくような歌や、はっとするような空白の瞬間があり、その細かな感情の揺れを、繊細に、そして力強く伝えている。バンドの、暗い魅力が深まった一枚である。 冒頭を飾る、痛切な人気曲“Falling Away from Me”の力強さ、そして“Trash”の攻撃性、さらに、キャッチーな“Make Me Bad”まで、収録曲は、いずれも聴き応えがある。“Beg for Me”“Wake Up”のような曲も、作品の充実を伝えている。ジョナサン・デイヴィスの、感情を剥き出しにした歌唱が、全編で力強く冴え渡っている。 ただ攻撃的なだけではなく、覚えやすいキャッチーなフックと、脆く儚い感情とが、同じ楽曲の中で同居することで、その楽曲に、強く抗いがたい引力が生まれている一枚だ。前作の、あの華やかさから一転し、より生々しく、暗い内面へと向き合っている。KORNの、そのダークな魅力を、凝縮した、力強く聴き応えのある傑作と言える。バンドの充実が光る一枚だ。

Issues is a fulfilling work on which Korn, using heavy, sinking guitar, bouncing bass and nervous rhythm, strongly draws deep isolation and fierce anger. Inheriting the great success of the previous Follow the Leader, it steps into a more introspective, dark direction. Even within a big, powerful sound, there are whispering singing and startling moments of blank space, conveying its fine emotional sway delicately and powerfully. A record where the band’s dark appeal deepened. From the power of the painful popular opener “Falling Away from Me” and the aggression of “Trash” to the catchy “Make Me Bad,” every song is engaging, while cuts like “Beg for Me” and “Wake Up” convey the work’s fullness. Jonathan Davis’s emotion-baring singing is powerfully in sharp form throughout. A record on which, not merely aggressive, memorable catchy hooks and fragile, fleeting emotion coexist within the same song, generating a strong, irresistible pull in the songs. Turning from the previous work’s splendor, it faces a rawer, darker inner self. A powerful, engaging masterpiece condensing Korn’s dark appeal — a record where the band’s fullness shines.
