Dark Assault is a powerful power-metal work combining Iron Savior’s own mechanical, hard riffs and a grand, cosmic-scale narrative. Also a substantial restart, made in the new lineup centered on Piet Sielck after Kai Hansen departed on the previous album. Thickly layered guitar and valiant choruses powerfully lift the songs to a heroic scale. A record on which the band’s firm character comes more to the fore. From the powerful drive of the opener “Never Say Die” and the aggression of “Seek and Destroy” to the drama of “Solar Wings,” every song is engaging, while cuts like “Made of Metal,” “Dragons Rising” and “I’ve Been to Hell” convey the work’s fullness. The rhythm is heavy and the melody clear, and even without deeply knowing the complex concept’s setting, you can fully enjoy the overwhelming power of the sound itself.
