『The X Factor』は、新ヴォーカリストのブレイズ・ベイリーを迎えたIRON MAIDENが、これまで以上に重く沈んだ空気と、長大な曲構成を追求した第10作だ。スティーヴ・ハリスのベースとツイン・ギターは、張り詰めた緊張を持続させながら、暗く重い物語をゆっくりと進めていく。バンドの歴史の中でも、特に内省的でダークな一枚である。 冒頭を飾る11分を超える大作“Sign of the Cross”の荘厳さ、シングル“Man on the Edge”の疾走、“Lord of the Flies”の攻撃性、そして“Fortunes of War”“The Edge of Darkness”まで、収録曲はいずれも重厚な陰影に満ちている。ブルース・ディッキンソンの華やかな高音とは異なる、ブレイズの低く実直な声が、曲の暗い陰影をより一層深いものにしている。 派手さや華やかさを一切排し、シリアスで重い世界観を、真正面から追求した点に本作の特徴がある。安易な明るさに逃げなかった、その挑戦的な姿勢は評価に値する。ヴォーカルの交代という大きな変化の中で、“Blood on the World's Hands”“2 A.M.”のような曲でも、重く沈んだ空気と長い展開が結び付いている。新しい時代の始まりを、決して安易ではない表情で描いた、意欲的で重厚な一枚と言える。

The X Factor is the tenth album on which Iron Maiden, welcoming new vocalist Blaze Bayley, pursues a heavier, more sunken air and long song construction than before. Steve Harris’s bass and the twin guitars slowly advance a dark, heavy story while sustaining a taut tension. Even in the band’s history, it is a particularly introspective, dark record. From the solemnity of the opening epic “Sign of the Cross,” over eleven minutes, and the speed of the single “Man on the Edge” to the aggression of “Lord of the Flies” and “Fortunes of War” and “The Edge of Darkness,” every song is full of weighty shading. Blaze’s low, plain voice, unlike Bruce Dickinson’s brilliant high register, makes the songs’ dark shading all the deeper. Its distinction is pursuing a serious, heavy world head-on, cutting all flash and flair. That challenging stance, which did not flee to easy brightness, deserves recognition. Amid the major change of a vocalist swap, painting the start of a new era in a face by no means easy, it is an ambitious, weighty record.
