『Walls of Jericho』は、HELLOWEENがスピード・メタルの荒々しさと、後に大きく開花するメロディ感覚を同時に鳴らしたデビュー作だ。カイ・ハンセンの高い声とギター、そしてマイケル・ヴァイカートのリフは、曲を常に前へと押し進めていく。まだ荒削りながらも、バンドの類まれな才能がすでに随所に閃いている。 冒頭を飾る“Ride the Sky”の疾走、“Metal Invaders”の攻撃性、“Heavy Metal (Is the Law)”の高揚、そして“How Many Tears”の大作志向まで、短い突進力と壮大な展開が絶妙に交差していく。“Guardians”のような曲も、初期HELLOWEENの荒々しいエネルギーを伝えている。 後年の明るく洗練されたパワー・メタル像とは異なる、より粗く攻撃的なHELLOWEENを味わえる一枚だ。ジューダス・プリーストやアイアン・メイデンの影響を受けつつ、そこにドイツ的なスピード感と独自のメロディを加えている。ジャーマン・パワー・メタルの夜明けを告げた、歴史的に重要なデビュー作と言える。“Reptile”“Phantoms of Death”のような曲でも、鋭いリフと荒々しいエネルギーが一貫して作品を牽引していく。荒々しさの中に、確かな未来が見える。

Walls of Jericho is the debut on which Helloween sounds the roughness of speed metal and a melodic sense that would later bloom greatly at once. Kai Hansen’s high voice and guitar and Michael Weikath’s riffs push the songs ever forward. Still rough, the band’s rare talent already flashes throughout. From the speed of the opening “Ride the Sky” and the aggression of “Metal Invaders” to the lift of “Heavy Metal (Is the Law)” and the epic bent of “How Many Tears,” short charges and grand development cross beautifully, while a cut like “Guardians” conveys early Helloween’s rough energy. It is a record that lets you savor a rougher, more aggressive Helloween, unlike the bright, refined power-metal image of later years. Influenced by Judas Priest and Iron Maiden, it adds a German sense of speed and a distinctive melody. Announcing the dawn of German power metal, it is a historically important debut — within the roughness, a sure future can be seen.
