『Higher』は、HAREM SCAREMが繊細なメロディ、厚く美しいハーモニー、そしてタイトなギター・リフを巧みに組み合わせ、洗練されたハード・ロックを作り上げた第9作だ。前作『Weight of the World』で確立した、原点回帰の路線を、さらに推し進めている。楽曲は、ポップで親しみやすい魅力を存分に持ちながらも、そのアレンジには、確かな緊張感と、知的な複雑さとが、しっかりと残されている。 冒頭“Reach”の力強い推進力、そして表題曲“Higher”のキャッチーなメロディは、バンドの充実を示している。“Give It To You”の勢い、“Waited”の叙情、そして“The Lucky Ones”のような曲も、収録曲の幅広さを伝えている。メンバーの卓越した演奏力が、曲の細部までを緻密に支えており、派手さよりも、その完成度の高さが強く印象に残る。 長年の豊富な経験を存分に生かした、質実で、聴き応えのある一枚だ。ベテランならではの、確かな安定感と、洗練されたメロディ・センスが、全編にみなぎっている。派手な仕掛けに頼ることなく、楽曲そのものの質の高さで、じっくりと聴かせる、円熟したメロディック・ハード・ロックの佳作と言える。バンドの職人技が存分に発揮されている。

Higher is the ninth album on which Harem Scarem deftly combines delicate melody, thick, beautiful harmony and tight guitar riffs to build refined hard rock. It pushes the back-to-origin direction established on the previous Weight of the World further. The songs fully hold a pop, accessible appeal, yet a sure tension and intelligent complexity firmly remain in the arrangement. The powerful drive of the opener “Reach” and the catchy melody of the title track “Higher” show the band’s fullness, while the momentum of “Give It To You,” the lyricism of “Waited” and a cut like “The Lucky Ones” convey the songs’ breadth. The members’ outstanding playing precisely supports the songs down to the details, and its high polish, over flash, leaves a strong impression. A plain, engaging record fully using ample long experience. A sure steadiness and refined melodic sense particular to veterans fill the whole. Winning carefully on the quality of the songs themselves without relying on flashy tricks, it is a fine work of mature melodic hard rock — the band’s craft fully displayed.
