Soul to Soul

『Soul to Soul』は、2021年11月12日に出た第2作である。デビュー作を書いたロバート・サールがいない。理由はオーヴァーランド本人が説明している——サールは他の仕事を抱えていて、こちらがやりたい時期に手が空かなかった。ただし決裂ではない。「ロバートは友人で、今も連絡を取り合っている」と彼は言う。後任のギターはスヴェン・ラーション。ストリート・トークやライオンヴィルにいた人物で、ある評者は彼の演奏がこの盤でオーヴァーランドを食っていると書いた。ナッレ・ポールソンとハーマン・フリン、そしてデル・ヴェッキオは残った。 作曲陣はむしろ増えている。ステファノ・リオネッティ、ペーテ・アルペンボリ、ヤン・オーケソン、クリスティアン・フィールと、メロディック・ロックの現役が持ち寄る形になった。“Wild World”ではオーヴァーランド自身がリード・ギターを弾いている。評価は割れた。ほぼ完璧なAORだと書く者がいる一方で、この企画がオーヴァーランドの経歴に何を足すのか分からない、FMやソロと大差ないという声もあった。ある評者はもっと鋭く、デル・ヴェッキオの鍵盤が本来突き抜けるべき和音を鳴らしているのに、フロンティアーズ特有の圧縮された音作りがそれを潰していると指摘した——その音作りの責任者はデル・ヴェッキオ自身である。

Soul to Soul is the second album, released on 12 November 2021. Robert Säll, who wrote the debut, is not on it. Overland himself explained why: Säll had other commitments and could not give the time when they wanted to make it. It was not a falling-out — Robert is a friend of his, he says, and they keep in touch. Sven Larsson, formerly of Street Talk and Lionville, took the guitar chair, and one reviewer wrote that he outshines Overland on this record. Nalle Påhlsson, Herman Furin and Del Vecchio all stayed. The writing team actually grew: Stefano Lionetti, Pete Alpenborg, Jan Åkesson and Kristian Fyhr all brought material in from across the current melodic rock scene. Overland plays the lead guitar himself on "Wild World." Opinion divided. Some called it almost faultless AOR; others could not see what the project adds to Overland's CV at all, finding it little different from FM or his solo work. One reviewer went sharper, noting that Del Vecchio's keyboards are hammering out chords that ought to pierce through while the typically compressed Frontiers production flattens them into mulch — and that the man responsible for that production is Del Vecchio.
