『Erase the Slate』は、DOKKENが、切れ味の良い、力強いギター、硬いリズム、そして哀感を帯びたヴォーカルを、改めて整理し、王道の、あのメロディック・メタルへと、力強く立ち返った、充実の作品だ。ジョージ・リンチの脱退後、名手レブ・ビーチを新ギタリストに迎えて制作された、新体制での一枚である。楽曲は、あくまでコンパクトだが、そのリフの、力強い押し出しと、コーラスの、記憶に残る、確かな強さとを、しっかりと備えている。 冒頭を飾る、疾走する表題曲“Erase the Slate”、そして“Change the World”のドラマ性、さらに“Maddest Hatter”のような曲まで、収録曲は、いずれも聴き応えがある。“Drown”、そして“Shattered”のような曲も、作品の充実を伝えている。レブ・ビーチの、あの卓越したギターが、全編で力強く冴え渡っている。 ギターのフレーズは、あくまで技巧的でありながらも、常に、楽曲のフックを、しっかりと支える役割を、力強く果たしている一枚だ。バンドが持つ、あの独特の陰影と、キャッチーな魅力とを、素直に、そして存分に楽しむことができる。実験作の後に、王道へと回帰した、聴き応えのある一枚と言える。バンドの原点回帰が光る一枚だ。

Erase the Slate is a fulfilling work on which Dokken, again organizing sharp, powerful guitar, hard rhythm and sorrow-tinged vocals, powerfully returned to straight-path melodic metal. A record of the new lineup, made after George Lynch’s departure with the master Reb Beach welcomed as the new guitarist. The songs are compact, yet firmly hold the powerful push of their riffs and the memorable, sure strength of the choruses. From the speeding title track “Erase the Slate” and the drama of “Change the World” to a cut like “Maddest Hatter,” every song is engaging, while cuts like “Drown” and “Shattered” convey the work’s fullness. Reb Beach’s outstanding guitar is powerfully in sharp form throughout. A record on which the guitar phrases, while technical, always powerfully fulfill the role of firmly supporting the songs’ hooks. You can honestly and fully enjoy the band’s distinctive shading and catchy appeal. An engaging record that returned to the straight path after an experimental work — a record where the band’s return to origins shines.
