Broken Bones

『Broken Bones』は、DOKKENが、硬く力強いギター・リフ、陰影のある美しいメロディ、そして、やや暗く重い音像を軸に、力強くまとめ上げた、充実の作品だ。80年代から続く、バンドらしい、あの確かな歌心を、しっかりと残しながらも、ここでは、華美な装飾よりも、あくまで、リフの、力強い手触りと、楽曲の、確かな緊張感とが、前面に押し出されている。より硬派な一枚である。 冒頭を飾る“Empire”、そして、劇的な表題曲“Broken Bones”、さらに、感動的な“Best of Me”まで、収録曲は、いずれも聴き応えがある。“Blind”、そして“Waterfall”のような曲も、作品の充実を伝えている。ジョン・レヴィンの、あの卓越したギターと、ドン・ドッケンの歌とが、力強く絡み合っている。 ヴォーカルと、ギターとが、鮮やかに交わる場面では、DOKKENならではの、あのメロディックな魅力が、しっかりと、そして力強く顔を出す一枚だ。クラシックなハード・ロックを、少し硬質で、大人びた表情で聴きたい時にこそ、実によく似合う。円熟期DOKKENの、その確かな実力を示す、聴き応えのある一枚と言える。バンドの安定した魅力が光る一枚だ。

Broken Bones is a fulfilling work on which Dokken powerfully pulled together around hard, powerful guitar riffs, shaded, beautiful melody and a somewhat dark, heavy sound. While firmly keeping the band’s sure songcraft continuing from the 1980s, here the powerful feel of the riffs and the songs’ sure tension are foregrounded rather than gorgeous decoration. A more hard-edged record. From the opener “Empire” and the dramatic title track “Broken Bones” to the moving “Best of Me,” every song is engaging, while cuts like “Blind” and “Waterfall” convey the work’s fullness. Jon Levin’s outstanding guitar and Don Dokken’s singing intertwine powerfully. A record on which, in passages where vocals and guitar vividly cross, Dokken’s own melodic appeal firmly and powerfully appears. It truly suits when you want to hear classic hard rock with a slightly harder, more mature expression. An engaging record showing the sure ability of Dokken in its mature period — a record where the band’s steady appeal shines.
