『Concerto for Group and Orchestra』は、ロック・バンドと管弦楽団との、本格的な接点を初めて大規模に示した、DEEP PURPLE初期の極めて野心的な記録だ。鍵盤奏者ジョン・ロードが作曲を手掛けた本作は、ロイヤル・アルバート・ホールにて、ロイヤル・フィルハーモニー管弦楽団と共に演奏された、記念碑的なライヴ作品である。 三つの楽章から成る大作は、クラシック音楽の荘厳な様式と、ロック・バンドの持つ荒々しいエネルギーとを、真正面から対峙させ、そして融合させようと試みている。リッチー・ブラックモアのギターや、イアン・ペイスのドラムが、オーケストラの壮大な響きの中で、力強く自己主張していく様は圧巻だ。当時としては極めて実験的な、大胆な挑戦であった。 ハード・ロック路線を確立する以前の、DEEP PURPLEが持っていた、幅広い音楽的野心と探究心とを、明確に示す重要な作品と言える。ジョン・ロードのクラシックへの深い素養が、バンドのその後の音楽性にも、大きな影響を与えている。商業的なヒットを狙った作品ではないが、その挑戦的な姿勢と、ジャンルを越えようとする気概は、今なお色褪せていない。ロックとオーケストラの融合という、一つの壮大な実験の先駆けとなった、歴史的に興味深い一枚である。

Concerto for Group and Orchestra is an extremely ambitious record from early Deep Purple, the first to show a genuine, large-scale meeting point between a rock band and an orchestra. Composed by keyboardist Jon Lord, it is a monumental live work performed with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall. The epic in three movements attempts to confront and fuse the solemn style of classical music with the rough energy of a rock band head-on. The way Ritchie Blackmore’s guitar and Ian Paice’s drums powerfully assert themselves within the grand sound of the orchestra is stunning. For its time, it was an extremely experimental, bold challenge. It is an important work that clearly shows the broad musical ambition and inquiry Deep Purple held before establishing its hard-rock direction. Jon Lord’s deep classical background gave great influence to the band’s later musicality as well. As a forerunner of one grand experiment — the fusion of rock and orchestra — it is a historically intriguing record.
