Stormcrow

『Stormcrow』は、デビュー作から6年を置いた第2作である。ヤニ・リーマタイネンによれば、数年前にも第2作の話は来ていたが、そのときは手が空かなかった。2014年に再び話が出たとき、時間ができていたので受けたという。間にはティモ・コティペルトとの二人組ブラッコースティックがあった。鍵盤はミッコ・ハルキンから、ストラトヴァリウスのイェンス・ヨハンソンへ交代する。イングヴェイ・マルムスティーンのもとにいた人物だ。ベースもユッカ・コスキネンからヨナス・クールベリへ替わり、コティペルトとヤニ・フルラは残った。プロデュースはリーマタイネン、ミックスはストラトヴァリウスのギタリストであるマティアス・クピアイネン、マスタリングはフィンヴォックスのミカ・ユッシラ。 2015年3月5日に題名と曲目が公表され、4月15日に“I Will Build You a Rome”、22日に表題曲、その8日後に“The Best of Times”が公開された。発売は日本が4月29日、ヨーロッパが5月15日、北米が5月19日。全11曲。速く畳みかける表題曲と“Constellation of Tears”、6分の管弦バラード“Too Tired to Run”、器楽曲の“I Am Legion”を経て“On the Shore”で終わる。リーマタイネンは、今度は何も証明しようとせず、ただ最良の素材を書こうとした、旋律こそが常に王だと語る。フルラの言葉では、堂々として途方もない一枚である。

Stormcrow is the second album, six years after the debut. Jani Liimatainen has said he was approached about a second Cain's Offering record some years earlier but had no time for it then; when the question came round again in 2014 he had room, and took it. In between came Blackoustic, his duo with Timo Kotipelto. Mikko Härkin gives way on keyboards to Jens Johansson of Stratovarius, formerly of Yngwie Malmsteen's band, and Jonas Kuhlberg replaces Jukka Koskinen on bass; Kotipelto and Jani Hurula remain. Liimatainen produced, Stratovarius guitarist Matias Kupiainen mixed, and Mika Jussila mastered at Finnvox. The title and tracklist went public on 5 March 2015. "I Will Build You a Rome" appeared on 15 April, the title track on the 22nd, and "The Best of Times" eight days after that. Japan got it on 29 April, Europe on 15 May, North America on 19 May. Eleven songs: the fast, piling title track and "Constellation of Tears," the six-minute orchestral ballad "Too Tired to Run," the instrumental "I Am Legion," and "On the Shore" to finish. This time, Liimatainen says, he was not trying to prove anything — only to write the best possible material, since melody is always king. In Hurula's words, the record is majestic and humongous.
