『Lost Highway』は、BON JOVIの、あの大きなコーラスと、親しみやすいメロディに、ナッシュヴィル由来の、温かいカントリーの手触りを加えた、意欲的な作品だ。前作収録の“Who Says You Can't Go Home”の成功を受け、より本格的に、カントリー・ミュージックの要素を取り入れている。アコースティック・ギターや、ペダル・スティールの、豊かな色彩が、楽曲に、柔らかで、広大な遠景を作り出している。 冒頭の表題曲“Lost Highway”の軽やかさ、そして、カントリー歌手ルアンダ・ランバートとのデュエットで、グラミー賞も受賞した、切ないバラード“(You Want to) Make a Memory”は、バンドの持つ、ポップで叙情的な強みを、また別の角度から、鮮やかに見せてくれる。“Summertime”“We Got It Going On”“Whole Lot of Leavin'”のような曲も、作品の充実を伝えている。 ロックの持つ、直進的な力強さを、決して消し去ることなく、そこに、より人肌に近い、温かな表情を、あえて選んだ一枚だ。カントリーとの融合は、バンドの音楽的な幅を、大きく広げてみせた。全米チャートで、再び1位を獲得するなど、商業的にも大きな成功を収めた。BON JOVIの、新たな挑戦と、その円熟を示す、聴き応えのある充実作と言える。

Lost Highway is an ambitious work that adds a warm, Nashville-derived country feel to Bon Jovi’s big choruses and accessible melody. Following the success of the previous album’s “Who Says You Can’t Go Home,” it takes in country-music elements more seriously. The rich colors of acoustic guitar and pedal steel create a soft, vast distant view in the songs. The lightness of the opening title track “Lost Highway” and the sorrowful ballad “(You Want to) Make a Memory,” a Grammy-winning duet with country singer LeAnn Rimes, vividly show the band’s pop, lyrical strength from another angle, while cuts like “Summertime,” “We Got It Going On” and “Whole Lot of Leavin’” convey the work’s fullness. A record that, never erasing rock’s straight power, deliberately chose a warmer, more human face. The fusion with country greatly widened the band’s musical range. It achieved great commercial success too, again reaching number one on the US chart. Showing Bon Jovi’s new challenge and its maturity, it is an engaging, fulfilling work.
