『Master of Reality』は、BLACK SABBATHが重さを単なる音量ではなく、低く沈む響き、間の取り方、反復するリフの圧力として定着させた第三作である。トニー・アイオミのギターとギーザー・バトラーのベースは、深く落とした音域で一体となり、曲の最初の一音から空気を重く変える。ビル・ワードのドラムは四角く刻むだけではなく、揺れや転がりを加えてグルーヴを生み、オジー・オズボーンの歌はその巨大な演奏の中に、切迫感と人間的な脆さを持ち込む。 “Sweet Leaf”の咳き込む導入から立ち上がる鈍い推進力、“After Forever”の問いかけるような歌と明快なリフ、“Children of the Grave”の行進するビート、“Into the Void”の底知れないうねりまで、本作は遅さと速さを問わず、重さを常に身体感覚として響かせる。一方で“Orchid”や“Solitude”は音数を引き、アルバムに静かな余白を与える。その休息があるからこそ、次に戻るリフの輪郭はさらに鋭く感じられる。後のドゥーム、ストーナー、スラッジへ続く感覚を予感させながら、何より四人の演奏が互いの隙間を埋めるのではなく、不穏な空間として生かしている点が重要だ。ヘヴィ・ロックの重心を決定的に下げた、BLACK SABBATHの核となる一枚である。

Master of Reality is Black Sabbath’s third album, and the record that fixes heaviness not as simple volume but as low-slung resonance, deliberate space, and the pressure of a repeated riff. Tony Iommi’s guitar and Geezer Butler’s bass lock together in a deeply lowered register, changing the weight of the room from the first note. Bill Ward does not merely mark time in square patterns; his rolling, mobile drumming gives the songs their groove. Ozzy Osbourne, meanwhile, brings urgency and human fragility into the middle of the massive sound. From the coughing entrance and blunt momentum of “Sweet Leaf” to the questioning vocal and clear-cut riff of “After Forever,” the marching pulse of “Children of the Grave,” and the bottomless surge of “Into the Void,” the album makes heaviness feel physical at every tempo. “Orchid” and “Solitude” reduce the number of notes and create quiet space around the larger songs. That breathing room makes the returning riffs feel even sharper. The record anticipates the sensibility of later doom, stoner, and sludge, yet its deeper achievement is the way the four players do not fill every gap. They use empty space as a source of unease. Master of Reality decisively lowers the center of gravity for heavy rock and remains one of the clearest statements of Black Sabbath’s core power.
