『Headless Cross』は、トニー・アイオミの、重いリフを、その核としながら、ゴシックで荘厳な空気と、劇的で美しいメロディとを、見事に結び付けた、充実の作品だ。トニー・マーティン期の、一つの頂点とも言える、高く評価される一枚である。トニー・マーティンの、伸びやかで力強い歌声と、名手コージー・パウエルの、あの大きく力強いドラムとが、楽曲に、堂々とした、確かなスケールを与えている。より完成度の高い一枚だ。 冒頭のイントロから、荘厳な表題曲“Headless Cross”へと至る展開、そして“Devil & Daughter”のドラマ性、さらに、大作“When Death Calls”まで、収録曲は、いずれも聴き応えがある。“Kill in the Spirit World”、そして“Nightwing”のような曲も、作品の充実を伝えている。トニー・マーティンの、あの力強い歌唱が、全編で冴え渡っている。 その暗さを、ただ重く鳴らすだけではなく、コーラスや、楽曲展開に、明確で確かな高揚感がある一枚だ。BLACK SABBATHの、あの伝統を、しっかりと守りながらも、後期のラインナップならではの、確かな色を、見事に確立している。トニー・マーティン期を代表する、力強く聴き応えのある傑作と言える。バンドの充実が光る一枚だ。

Headless Cross is a fulfilling work on which, while cored on Tony Iommi’s heavy riffs, gothic, solemn air and dramatic, beautiful melody are splendidly bound. A highly praised record that can be called one peak of the Tony Martin period. Tony Martin’s soaring, powerful voice and the big, powerful drums of the master Cozy Powell give the songs an imposing, sure scale. A record of higher polish. From the development from the opening intro to the solemn title track “Headless Cross” and the drama of “Devil & Daughter” to the epic “When Death Calls,” every song is engaging, while cuts like “Kill in the Spirit World” and “Nightwing” convey the work’s fullness. Tony Martin’s powerful singing is in sharp form throughout. A record on which, rather than merely sounding the darkness heavily, there is a clear, sure lift in the choruses and song development. While firmly keeping Black Sabbath’s tradition, it splendidly establishes a sure color particular to the later lineup. A powerful, engaging masterpiece representing the Tony Martin period — a record where the band’s fullness shines.
