Deuce

『Deuce』は、バンドが解体しかけたまま作り上げた第2作である。DJアシュバは2002年2月に去り、のちにシックス：エー・エム、そしてガンズ・アンド・ローゼズへ加わった。グレン・ソベルも続いて抜けている。それでもジョー・レステ、アンソニー・フォックス、ケニー・クウィーンズは止まらず、2003年7月にアレックス・グロッシ(リード・ギター)とマット・スター(ドラム)を迎えて録音を始めた。プロデュースもミックスもエンジニアリングもフォックスが一人で担い、クウィーンズが追加のプロデュースを添えている。大手の手は借りていない。 発売までがまた長かった。日本のJVCから2005年4月21日、米国ではスピットファイアと契約して同年8月23日。その頃にはグロッシもすでに脱退していた。冒頭“Anyone”の転がるリフ、“Never”の工業的な導入、3分に満たない“Straight to Hell”の暴走まで、全13曲は前作より重く、モダンな加工が増えている。“Freedom”は後年サンドラ・ブロック主演の『あなたは私の婿になる』へ、“Anyone”は『サンズ・オブ・アナーキー』へ使われた。日本盤には“Starr Cross”と“I Still Miss You”が追加されている。結果的に、これが最後のスタジオ作となった。

Deuce is the second album, made while the band was half falling apart. DJ Ashba left in February 2002, later joining Sixx:A.M. and then Guns N' Roses, and Glen Sobel followed him out. Joe Lesté, Anthony Focx and Kenny Kweens carried on regardless, and by July 2003 they had brought in Alex Grossi on lead guitar and Matt Starr on drums to start recording. Focx handled production, mixing and engineering single-handed, with additional production from Kweens. No major label had a hand in it. Getting it out took a long time too. JVC issued it in Japan on 21 April 2005; in the US it waited for a Spitfire deal and arrived on 23 August. By then Grossi had already left as well. From the rolling riff of the opener “Anyone” through the industrial entrance of “Never” to the under-three-minute charge of “Straight to Hell,” the thirteen tracks are heavier than the debut and carry more modern treatment. “Freedom” was later used in the Sandra Bullock film The Proposal and “Anyone” on Sons of Anarchy. The Japanese edition adds “Starr Cross” and “I Still Miss You.” It turned out to be their last studio album.
