Above and Beyond

『Above and Beyond』は、2009年1月にAOR Heavenから出た作品である。前作『Hear-Say』(2005年、フロンティアーズ)が従来より重く、評価が割れたのを受け、本作は元の旋律的な地肌へ戻った。プロデュースはヨナス・レインゴールド――カルマカニックの首謀者にして、フラワー・キングスのベーシストである。この人選は偶然ではない。ドラムのハイメ・サラザールは1994年のロイネ・ストルト『The Flower King』以来フラワー・キングスの創設メンバーであり、1999年2月にレインゴールドをそのオーディションへ引き入れたのも彼だった。プログレとの縁は、ドラムの椅子を通って結ばれている。 “I Don't Want You”が短く鋭く始まり、公式ビデオもこの曲に作られた。“Just a Heartbeat Away”“Let Me Be the One”と続き、“A Lot to Learn”“I Believe”を経て表題曲“Above and Beyond”が置かれる。真正のバラードは“Surrender”ただ一つで、“I Need Someone”の大合唱が全13曲を閉じる。批評家の反応は明快で、往年の姿への回帰と受け取られ、バンド生涯の最高作に挙げる評者まで現れた。日本盤はネクサスから“Reaching Up”を足して出され、2015年にはメロディアス・フロンティア/セブン・シーズが再発している。

Above and Beyond was released in January 2009 by AOR Heaven. Its predecessor Hear-Say (2005, Frontiers) had been heavier than usual and divided opinion, and this record returns to the band's melodic bedrock. Jonas Reingold produced — the man behind Karmakanic and the bassist of The Flower Kings. The choice was no accident. Drummer Jaime Salazar had been a founding member of The Flower Kings since Roine Stolt's 1994 album The Flower King, and it was Salazar who brought Reingold to the audition for that band in February 1999. The link to progressive rock runs straight through the drum stool. "I Don't Want You" opens short and sharp, and the official video was made for it. "Just a Heartbeat Away" and "Let Me Be the One" follow; after "A Lot to Learn" and "I Believe" comes the title track. There is exactly one true ballad, "Surrender," and the massed chorus of "I Need Someone" closes all thirteen songs. Critics were unambiguous: they heard a return to classic form, and some went as far as calling it the best record of the band's career. The Japanese edition, on Nexus, added "Reaching Up," and Melodious Frontier and Seven Seas reissued it there in 2015.
