『Matters of Survival』は、AXXISが、大きく開かれたコーラスと、切れ味の良いギターとを、より整った洗練された音像で提示した、充実の第4作だ。ロサンゼルスでの制作経験を経た本作は、その開放的で、垢抜けたサウンドが特徴となっている。ベルンハルト・ヴァイスの、個性的で表現力豊かな歌は、楽曲の持つ、明るさと、確かな緊張感とを、同時に力強く引き出している。より磨かれたプロダクションが光る一枚だ。 冒頭“Ecstasy”の力強い推進力、そして“Idolator”の攻撃性、さらに“C'est la Vie”のような曲まで、収録曲は、いずれも聴き応えがある。“On My Own”“All My Life”のような曲も、作品の充実を伝えている。アメリカでの制作を感じさせる、あの垢抜けた開放感がありながらも、その楽曲の、確かな芯は、あくまで、ヨーロピアン・メロディック・ロックにある。 より洗練された音作りへと向かいながらも、AXXISならではの、あるメロディの強さと、キャッチーさとは、少しも失われていない一枚だ。そのフックの、確かな強さを、正面から存分に楽しむことができる。90年代半ばの、その充実を示す、力強く聴き応えのある一枚と言える。バンドの洗練が光る一枚だ。

Matters of Survival is a fulfilling fourth album on which Axxis presented widely open choruses and sharp guitar with a more arranged, refined sound. This work, after a making experience in Los Angeles, is characterized by its open, polished sound. Bernhard Weiss’s distinctive, expressive singing powerfully draws out both the songs’ brightness and a sure tension at once. A record where a more polished production shines. From the powerful drive of the opener “Ecstasy” and the aggression of “Idolator” to a cut like “C’est la Vie,” every song is engaging, while cuts like “On My Own” and “All My Life” convey the work’s fullness. While having a polished openness evoking the making in America, the songs’ sure core lies purely in European melodic rock. A record on which, while heading toward a more refined production, Axxis’s own melodic strength and catchiness are not lost in the least. You can fully enjoy the sure strength of its hooks head-on.
