『Moonglow』は、AVANTASIAが大作志向のメタル・オペラを、より陰影豊かな物語と洗練されたメロディで描き直した作品だ。壮麗なキーボード、ギターの厚い層、合唱を思わせるコーラスが広い舞台を用意する一方、曲の核には親しみやすい歌メロが置かれている。ファンタジー的なスケールと人間的な感情を同時に抱え込んだ、円熟期の傑作である。 “Ghost in the Moon”“Moonglow”“The Raven Child”といった楽曲では、複数の声が交差する場面でも、それぞれの歌唱は役柄の違いを示すために機能している。ハンジ・キュルシュ（ブラインド・ガーディアン）、ヨルン・ランデ、キャンディス・ナイト（ブラックモアズ・ナイト）ら、多彩なゲストが参加する。“Book of Shallows”“Requiem for a Dream”のような楽曲にも、バンドの充実した演奏が息づいている。疾走するパワー・メタルから感傷的なバラードまで、アルバムは一枚を通して景色を変え続ける。AVANTASIAらしい劇性を存分に味わえる、充実した一枚である。本作は全米・全欧のチャートで軒並み上位に食い込みAVANTASIAの人気の高さを改めて証明した、円熟の極みに達した屈指の傑作である。

Moonglow is a work on which AVANTASIA re-drew their epic-minded metal opera with a more shadow-rich story and refined melody. While grand keyboards, thick guitar layers and choir-like choruses prepare a wide stage, an accessible vocal melody is placed at the core of the songs. Holding fantastical scale and human emotion at once, it is a masterpiece of their mature period. On “Ghost in the Moon,” “Moonglow” and “The Raven Child,” even in scenes where multiple voices cross, each singing functions to show the difference of roles. Varied guests such as Hansi Kürsch (Blind Guardian), Jørn Lande and Candice Night (Blackmore’s Night) take part. Songs like “Book of Shallows” and “Requiem for a Dream” breathe the band’s full playing too. From racing power metal to sentimental ballads, the album keeps changing scenery across the record. It is a full record on which characteristically AVANTASIA drama can be fully savored.
