Ballistic, Sadistic

本作『Ballistic, Sadistic』は、ジェフ・ウォーターズ率いるANNIHILATORが、スラッシュ・メタルならではの速度、変拍子的なひねりの効いた展開、そしてブラック・ユーモアとを、極めて高い密度で凝縮した作品だ。近年は、ウォーターズ自身がヴォーカルも兼任しており、その一貫したビジョンが、作品に、鋭く統一された輪郭を与えている。楽曲は、鋭いリフで鋭く切り込みながらも、決して一直線には終わらず、テンポやフレーズの巧みな切り替えで、常に聴き手の耳を、強く引き付けていく。 冒頭“Armed to the Teeth”の攻撃的な推進力、“Psycho Ward”のドラマ性、そして“I Am Warfare”“The Attitude”“Dressed Up for Evil”のような曲まで、収録曲は、タイトルどおりの暴力性を持ちながらも、その演奏には、確かな遊び心と、職人的で緻密な整理とがある。 速弾きや、卓越した技巧を、存分に前面へと押し出しながらも、最終的に、最も強く印象に残るのは、リフそのものが持つ、強烈なキャラクターである点が本作の魅力だ。80年代のデビュー以来変わらない、ANNIHILATORならではの、危険で知的な楽しさを、現代の力強い音で、存分に味わうことができる。ベテランの底力を示す、力強く充実したテクニカル・スラッシュ作品と言える。

Ballistic, Sadistic is a work on which Jeff Waters-led Annihilator concentrates, at extremely high density, the speed particular to thrash metal, developments with odd-meter twists and black humor. In recent years Waters himself has doubled on vocals, and that consistent vision gives the work a sharp, unified outline. The songs cut sharply with keen riffs yet never end in a straight line, always strongly drawing the listener’s ear with deft changes of tempo and phrase. From the aggressive drive of the opener “Armed to the Teeth” and the drama of “Psycho Ward” to cuts like “I Am Warfare,” “The Attitude” and “Dressed Up for Evil,” the songs hold the violence of the title, yet their playing has sure playfulness and craftsman-like precise organization. Its appeal is that, while fully foregrounding fast picking and outstanding technique, what finally leaves the strongest impression is the powerful character of the riffs themselves. You can fully savor Annihilator’s dangerous, intelligent fun, unchanged since the 1980s debut, in modern, powerful sound. Showing a veteran’s underlying strength, it is a powerful, fulfilling technical-thrash work.
