『Skyforger』は、AMORPHISが、重く力強いギターと、北欧的な深い哀愁とを、極めて自然な流れで融合させた、重要な作品だ。再びフィンランドの国民的叙事詩『カレワラ』の世界を題材とし、その物語性を、色濃く打ち出している。力強く攻撃的なパートと、柔らかく美しいメロディとが、絶えず交差し、ヘヴィでありながらも、聴き手の心に、深い情感を、確かに残していく。トミ・ヨーツェンの、卓越したヴォーカルが、その世界観を、力強く牽引している。 冒頭“Sampo”の力強い推進力、そして、大ヒットした、キャッチーな名曲“Silver Bride”まで、収録曲は、いずれも聴き応えがある。“From the Heaven of My Heart”“Sky Is Mine”“My Sun”のような曲も、作品の充実を伝えている。フォーク的な、豊かな色合いと、モダンなメタルの、確かな質感とが同居し、曲ごとに、その景色が、鮮やかに変わっていく。とりわけ“Silver Bride”は、バンドの代表曲の一つとなった。 バンドの、その多面的な魅力を、一枚の、確かな流れとして、見事に感じ取ることができる、完成度の高いアルバムだ。トミ・ヨーツェン加入後の、あの充実期の、その頂点の一つを刻んでいる。フィンランドの、深い神話的世界を、力強く現代のメタルで表現した、聴き応えのある傑作と言える。バンドの円熟が光る一枚だ。

Skyforger is an important work on which Amorphis fuses heavy, powerful guitar and deep Nordic sorrow in an extremely natural flow. Again themed on the world of Finland’s national epic the Kalevala, it strongly puts forward its narrative. Powerful, aggressive parts and soft, beautiful melody constantly intersect, and while heavy, it surely leaves deep emotion in the listener’s heart. Tomi Joutsen’s outstanding vocals powerfully drive that world. From the powerful drive of the opener “Sampo” to the catchy hit classic “Silver Bride,” every song is engaging, while cuts like “From the Heaven of My Heart,” “Sky Is Mine” and “My Sun” convey the work’s fullness. Rich folk color and modern metal’s sure texture coexist, and the scenery vividly changes from song to song. In particular, “Silver Bride” became one of the band’s signature songs. A polished album on which one can splendidly feel the band’s many-sided appeal as one sure flow. It inscribes one peak of the fulfilling period after Tomi Joutsen joined. An engaging masterpiece that powerfully expressed Finland’s deep mythic world in modern metal — a record where the band’s maturity shines.
