LANGUAGE
The Collection II is a five-CD box covering the ten years Van Halen spent with Sammy Hagar, 1986 to 1996. It follows The Collection, which did the David Lee Roth years in 2015, and it holds every studio album made by the line-up people took to calling Van Hagar.
5150 (1986), OU812 (1988), For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge (1991) and Balance (1995) are all here in 2023 remasters. Every one of them went to number one on the Billboard album chart -- four consecutive number ones, which the Roth era never managed. Eddie Van Halen's guitar was what it had always been; what Hagar brought was an open, high voice and a pull towards melody, and out of that came "Why Can't This Be Love", "When It's Love", "Right Now" and "Can't Stop Lovin' You".
The fifth disc collects the rarities of the period, including the last two new songs of Hagar's tenure: "Humans Being", written for the film Twister, and "It's About Time", recorded for the 1996 compilation Best Of - Volume I. Beside them sit a cover of Little Feat's "A Apolitical Blues", the instrumental "Baluchitherium" and other soundtrack work from the same years.
Warner Records released the box on 6 October 2023 as R2 725109. There is no Japanese edition. Forty-eight tracks.
