LINER NOTES
LANGUAGE
Phenomenon, released in 1974, was UFO's first album for Chrysalis and the first with Michael Schenker on guitar. Chrysalis describes it as the point where the band left their earlier space-rock sound behind for heavier rock. Leo Lyons produced it at Morgan Studios, and it holds the two songs that grew into the band's biggest rock anthems, "Doctor Doctor" and "Rock Bottom". In 2019 Chrysalis issued a three-CD deluxe edition, newly remastered by Andy Pearce from the original analogue production masters, but in Japan it was sold only as an import. Marquee Inc. released it on 23 July 2025 as its first Japanese edition, on three SHM-CDs in a paper sleeve, catalogue number MICP-30210, with a combined running time of more than two hours and twenty-eight minutes. The following month Marquee gave the deluxe edition of the next album, Force It, the same SHM-CD and paper-sleeve treatment. The first disc is the ten-song album. The second gathers sixteen pieces: demos of "Sixteen" and "Oh My", the single sides "Give Her the Gun" and "Sweet Little Thing", an outtake of "Sixteen", single edits of "Doctor Doctor" and "Rock Bottom", a mono single edit of "Doctor Doctor", seven rough mixes, some of them instrumental, and an early version of "Queen of the Deep". The third disc is eight songs recorded in Atlanta on 5 November 1974, at what Chrysalis names as the Electric Ballroom, and it includes songs that are not on the album, among them "Give Her the Gun", "Cold Turkey" and "Prince Kujuku". "Doctor Doctor" and "Rock Bottom" turn up on all three discs: on the album, as single edits and rough mixes on the second disc, and live on the third.
