Spellbound

The second studio album, released by MCA Records on 10 April 1981 as MCF 3104. It reached number 33 and stayed four weeks. It is the first record by the new line-up, with John Sykes on guitar and Jon Deverill singing. Deverill on what changed: "The sound of the Tygers changed totally after John and myself joined. We now had two guitarists so it became much fuller. I'm a completely different singer to Jess Cox. I have a bigger range and yes, a more lyrical approach." He rates Sykes the best by far of anyone he played with. It was cut at Morgan Studios in London again, with Chris Tsangarides again, over roughly three to four weeks. Gary Moore was working in Studio 2 and Rick Wakeman in Studio 3. Moore was Sykes's hero, and lent him his 1950s Les Paul — the one that had passed through Peter Green's and Jeff Beck's hands. The ten songs run from "Gangland" to "Don't Stop By" and include "Hellbound", which reached number 48 as a single.
