10,000 Days was Tool's fourth album, five years after Lateralus. There was no outside producer: the album is credited as written and produced by Tool, with Joe Barresi recording and mixing. Adam Jones said the songs were about 95 percent written before the studio, the first being "Rosetta Stoned". Recording took place at O'Henry in Burbank and at Grandmaster and The Loft in Hollywood, mixing at Bay 7 in North Hollywood. The official site reported that studio work ended on 29 January 2006 and that Bob Ludwig mastered the record in Portland, Maine, on 31 January. Maynard James Keenan linked the title to the Saturn Return, which comes round about every 10,000 days and which he saw as a turning point in one's late twenties. The two-part "Wings For Marie (Pt 1)" and "10,000 Days (Wings Pt 2)" are addressed to his mother, Judith Marie, paralysed by a stroke in 1976 until her death in June 2003, a span many also read in the title. The booklet credits Lustmord with the storm sounds and Bill McConnell with the voice on "Lipan Conjuring", and the official site said only the four members played on the record. Released in North America on 2 May 2006, it sold 564,000 copies in its first week, a career best at the time, and entered the Billboard 200 at number one. It entered the UK chart at four, their highest placing there to that date, and reached 16 in Japan, where BMG Japan issued it on 10 May. The RIAA certified it gold and platinum on 2 June 2006 and double platinum on 15 April 2021. "The Pot" spent four weeks atop Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart, and it and "Vicarious" were Grammy nominees for Best Hard Rock Performance. Jones conceived the package as a book that unfolds, with stereoscopic lenses built into one side; seen through them, each set of paintings and photographs in the booklet resolves into a single 3-D image. Featuring Alex Grey's painting Net of Being, it won Jones the Grammy for Best Recording Package in 2007.
