Liner Notes

Renegade is Thin Lizzy's eleventh album, on which they depicted urban shading, layering the color of keyboards over the heat of their twin guitars. It became Snowy White's last album with the band. Young keyboardist Darren Wharton was welcomed as an official member, and his stately phrases color the opening track "Angel of Death." The title track, co-written by White and Lynott, has lyrics inspired in part by Albert Camus's The Rebel. The album was originally to be titled Trouble Boys. Varied songs like "Hollywood (Down on Your Luck)," "Renegade" and "Mexican Blood" line up. It also shows an experimental breadth, with the jazz-tinged "Fats" and the Mexican-flavored "Mexican Blood." Stepping beyond their usual hard rock, the album met a modest reception at the time, but has been reappraised in later years. A record reflecting the band's shade-rich side. Around this time, the band headlined the first-ever Slane Castle concert, with support from acts including U2. A record where a daring spirit shows through.
