LINER NOTES
LANGUAGE
74-75: Night Life / Fighting is a seven-CD box built around the band's fourth and fifth albums, Night Life from 1974 and Fighting from 1975, and the sessions that produced them. Universal Music Japan present it as the follow-up to the 2024 set 1976. These are the first two albums Phil Lynott and Brian Downey made as a four-piece, with Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson on guitars; Universal Music Japan date Night Life to 8 November 1974 and Fighting to 12 September 1975, and note that Fighting reached number 60 on the UK chart.
The first disc carries Night Life both as first released and in a new stereo mix made by Richard Whittaker under Gorham's supervision and mastered at Abbey Road by Geoff Pesche. The second holds a remaster of Fighting with four 2025 mixes — "Rosalie", "Wild One", "Kings Vengeance" and "Silver Dollar". The third and fourth discs split the outtakes, B-sides and single edits between the two albums, the Night Life half including the demos made with Gary Moore. The fifth turns to alternate and extended takes and demos, the sixth to BBC sessions and concert recordings, and the seventh is the show at Derby College of Technology on 21 November 1975. A hundred and six tracks, about seven hours and twenty-four minutes.
The ten-inch box holds a 40-page hardback in which MOJO's Mark Blake supplies the notes, alongside rare photographs and a contribution from Jim Fitzpatrick, the artist behind the Night Life cover. Universal Music Japan released the Japanese edition on SHM-CD as a strictly limited run, UICY-80687/93, on 21 November 2025, the same day as the import, with the English notes translated and the lyrics given in Japanese. Thin Lizzy's own channel has a visualiser for "Rosalie (Outtake)" from the fifth disc — a complete early take recorded at Olympic Studios in London with only a guide vocal.
