Liner Notes

Symphony X is the self-titled debut by the American progressive metal band formed in Middletown, New Jersey in 1994 around guitarist Michael Romeo. It came out through Zero Corporation after Romeo's solo demo drew a response in Japan. Crossing classical construction with technical playing, a neoclassical style deeply influenced by Yngwie Malmsteen runs throughout. Released on December 6, 1994, it initially came out only in Japan. It was recorded by the early lineup featuring vocalist Rod Tyler and bassist Thomas Miller, and is the only album to feature Tyler. From the opening instrumental "Into the Dementia" to "The Raging Season," where Queen-indebted layered choirs shine, the solemn ballad "Shades of Grey," and the 12-minute epic "A Lesson Before Dying," the seeds hinting at the later leap are packed throughout. Rough-hewn yet carving Romeo's fast playing and the group's high skill, it is an ambitious starting point.
