Vai began taking guitar lessons at the age of twelve, and his teacher was Joe Satriani. His official biography opens his career with that line. The two came from the same part of Long Island; they would later share a stage in G3, and from 2024 tour together as SATCHVAI.
Vai turned professional at eighteen, and his first job was not playing but writing music down. According to his official biography he began by transcribing for Frank Zappa, and went on to play with him.
Vai has won three Grammy Awards and been nominated fifteen times. His official biography gives those figures alongside more than three decades of work and over fifteen million albums sold.
His official biography records that Guitar World magazine ranked him the tenth greatest guitarist of all time, and that Guitar Player magazine has given him more than fifteen honours. His albums have sold over fifteen million copies.
Vai holds honorary doctorates from both Berklee College of Music and Musicians Institute; his official biography presents them as earned by his career accomplishments. One of them came from a school he did not finish: he left Berklee in the middle of his fourth semester to work for Zappa.
In 2012 the TEC Foundation presented Vai with the Les Paul Award. According to his official biography the award recognises those who set the highest standard of excellence in the creative application of technology, and the Foundation said of him that he is a musical alchemist of the highest order.
The Ibanez JEM that Vai designed in 1985 became, in the words of his official biography, one of the longest running and most successful signature series guitars in history. Design elements such as its floating tremolo went on to become industry staples.
Vai is also the man who brought the seven-string to market. His official biography calls The Universe, which he created, the first commercial seven-string electric guitar. On amplifiers he worked with the Carvin Corporation on tube designs.

Sound Theories Vol. 1 & 2, released in 2007, was performed with the Netherlands' Metropole Orkest. As his official biography's mention of it makes clear, Vai is a composer and arranger of orchestral music as much as he is a rock guitarist.
Vai also tours internationally with Generation Axe. The players his official biography names alongside him are Zakk Wylde, Yngwie Malmsteen, Nuno Bettencourt and Tosin Abasi. Several guitarists sharing one night is the same idea behind G3, which his old teacher Satriani started.
In 1998 Vai co-founded the Make a Noise Foundation with his then-manager. According to his official biography its purpose is to put instruments and music education within reach of young players who could not otherwise get them. In 2019 he published Vaideology, a music theory book for guitarists, and during the pandemic in 2020 he launched the Alien Guitar Secrets webcast series.
