Arise

This is the fourth album. After Beneath the Remains had drawn attention outside Brazil, the band moved to Phoenix, Arizona and took on new management. In August 1990 they travelled to Florida and recorded at Morrisound Recording, Scott Burns's home studio, on a $40,000 budget from Roadrunner — which is why the sound is a step up from anything before it. Drummer Igor Cavalera and Burns spent a full week on nothing but drum tunings and microphone placement. The pace is fractionally reined in from the previous record and Cavalera brings a groove-led feel to the kit. It has been described as the band taking their early fusion of death metal and thrash to its logical end. At the same time this is where things from outside metal first enter: industrial, hardcore punk and Latin percussion. The tour behind it was the band's longest to that point, 220 shows in 39 countries across 1991 and 1992. The album went gold in Indonesia along the way, the band's first certification of any kind, and had reached platinum worldwide by the time the tour ended. The running order here is the original's as printed.
