Against came out in October 1998 on Roadrunner; sources disagree on the day, some giving the 5th and others the 6th. Roadrunner issued a seventeen-track Japanese edition at the same time as RRCY-1080. Howard Benson produced it with the band, and it was recorded through 1998 in eight studios, among them rooms in São Paulo, California and on Sado Island in Japan.
It is the first record with Derrick Green, who joined in 1997 after Max Cavalera left at the end of 1996. Green sings, Andreas Kisser plays guitar, Paulo Jr. plays bass and Igor Cavalera plays drums.
The twelfth song, "Kamaitachi", carries the taiko group Kodo, who are based on Sado. Jason Newsted of Metallica plays on "Hatred Aside" and João Gordo of Ratos de Porão sings on "Reza".
It reached number eighty-two on the American Billboard 200, forty in Britain, twenty-three in Germany and twenty-five in Australia. The singles were "Choke" in November 1998, the title track in 1999 and "Tribus" that June.
Fifteen songs; the running order here is that of the standard Roadrunner pressing, RR 8700-2.
