LINER NOTES
LANGUAGE
This third album was made by Satyr on vocals, lead guitar and bass, Nocturno Culto of Darkthrone on rhythm guitar under the name Kveldulv, and Frost on drums. Gerlioz — Geir Bratland — played synthesizer and grand piano as a session musician, and Nebelhexë, Andrea Haugen, speaks the part on "The Dawn of a New Age".
The band have described the record as darker and more aggressive than anything they had made before. Metal Hammer wrote that it catches them at their most apocalyptic, marching towards a biblical Armageddon with real swagger. Terrorizer said that "The Dawn of a New Age", "Mother North" and the title track were stronger than any song in their past, and that Satyr's writing showed a maturity found only among peers such as Emperor.
A video was made for "Mother North", which was uncommon in black metal at the time. It opens with Prokofiev's "Montagues and Capulets" and appears briefly in the film Spun. IGN included the album in its 10 Great Black Metal Albums in 2009, and Decibel inducted it into its hall of fame. A remastered edition marking twenty years followed in May 2016. The running order here is the original's as printed.
