Liner Notes

Rush is the debut on which the group that would later build elaborate suites and conceptual worlds first appears as a direct, hard-rocking three-piece. Geddy Lee’s high, piercing voice and thick bass, Alex Lifeson’s blues-rooted riffs, and John Rutsey’s powerful drumming push one another forward without unnecessary decoration. “Finding My Way” opens the door with speed, “In the Mood” shows an accessible hook, and “Working Man” combines a heavy riff with an extended solo to create the first Rush song with truly defining weight. “Before and After” and “Here Again” already hint at a taste for darker atmosphere and larger development, but the album’s core is performance heat rather than design. The influence of contemporary hard rock is openly present, yet the feeling of Lee’s bass and vocal at the front, along with the way three musicians fill every open space, already creates a tension that belongs specifically to Rush. This is not a blueprint for the polished progressive architecture of later years. It is the record of a young band transferring stage energy directly to tape. Heard with that in mind, its rawness and forward movement remain fresh even for listeners who know the group’s later grandeur.
