Liner Notes

Hemispheres is a 1978 RUSH album that ventures deeply into progressive rock without losing the memorable riffs and forward motion that keep its large-scale designs alive. The opening “Cygnus X-1 Book II: Hemispheres” divides a mythic theme into multiple scenes, with guitar, bass and drums passing the lead role between them as they construct a much larger narrative. Changes of meter and key are not display for their own sake; they supply movement and tension to the record’s central conflict between reason and emotion. “Circumstances” condenses urgency into a shorter form, “The Trees” combines a fable-like lyric with an easy-to-remember melody, and “La Villa Strangiato” turns advanced instrumental playing into a sequence of sharply changing landscapes rather than a collection of disconnected fragments. Geddy Lee’s bass and high vocal range, Alex Lifeson’s tonal color and Neil Peart’s detailed drumming are individually vivid but always serve the larger architecture. The more closely the album is heard, the more clearly its melody and humor emerge from beneath its complexity. Hemispheres records RUSH at a moment of extraordinary ambition, where the focus can shift with every listen from grand design to the playful interaction of three musicians.
