In Times New Roman... is the band's eighth album, released by Matador Records on 16 June 2023 and produced by the band themselves. It closes the trilogy that began with ...Like Clockwork in 2013 and continued with Villains in 2017. Beatink issued the Japanese edition on high-quality UHQCD with liner notes and translated lyrics.
The line-up is Josh Homme on vocals, guitar and percussion, Troy Van Leeuwen on guitar, Dean Fertita on guitar, keyboards and percussion, Michael Shuman on bass, backing vocals and percussion, and Jon Theodore on drums.
Homme has said the record sat unfinished for two and a half years, through a divorce, litigation and the deaths of friends. "I wasn't done living", he put it, and he held the vocals back until November before finishing.
Three songs came out ahead of it: "Emotion Sickness" on 11 May, "Carnavoyeur" on 31 May and "Paper Machete" on 14 June. The album reached nine on the Billboard 200 and two in Britain, and went to number one in Austria, both Belgian charts, the Netherlands and New Zealand. Metacritic scored it 80 and AllMusic four and a half stars out of five; Pitchfork gave it 6.8 while calling it the band's heaviest and angriest work since Era Vulgaris in 2007.
