Return in Bloodred

Return in Bloodred, released by Metal Blade on April 4, 2005, is Powerwolf's first album, and it arrives with the band's blueprint already drawn. Formed in Saarbrücken in 2003, the group had settled on the parts it still uses: a church organ, choir-shaped stacked vocals, the trained voice of Attila Dorn — who studied singing in Romania — and mid-tempo riffs with the ornament cut away. Sacred imagery and beast imagery share one stage from the first bar. “Mr. Sinister” opens low and heavy. “We Came to Take Your Souls” and “Kiss of the Cobra King” set out the method plainly: elevation built through repetition rather than speed. “Black Mass Hysteria” and “The Evil Made Me Do It” bring in a horror-film way of telling a story, and the closing “Son of the Morning Star” runs solemnity and momentum together. The orchestral weight of the later records is not here yet. What is here — singable choruses, the organ's colour, a ritual turn of phrase — is the entire vocabulary the next twenty years would enlarge rather than replace. It remains the plainest way into the band.
