Coverkill, the covers album, came out on CMC International in the United States on 26 October 1999 as 06076 86279-2, and on Steamhammer/SPV in Germany. The band produced it with Andy Katz. New recordings sit beside songs taped during earlier album sessions: "I'm Against It" comes from the Under the Influence period, "Ain't Nothin' to Do" from Horrorscope, "Cornucopia" from The Killing Kind, and "No Feelings" and "Space Truckin'" from From the Underground and Below.
It opens with "Overkill", the title track of the 1979 Motörhead album the band took its name from, and goes on to songs by the Sex Pistols, Jethro Tull, Black Sabbath (three of them), Deep Purple, Kiss, Manowar, Judas Priest, the Dead Boys and the Ramones. Ellsworth has said that if you put the punk exploding in New York in the seventies and the New Wave of British Heavy Metal into a bag and mixed it up, what came out would be Overkill, and the choice of songs spans both.
Nippon Crown issued the Japanese edition (CRCL-4740) on 21 January 2000 with the same twelve songs. Spotify lists the opener as "Overkill - Live", but the band's own site of the time gives it simply as "Overkill". The running order here is the original's as printed.
