It was recorded between 18 November 2018 and 6 March 2019 at Park Studios / Psykbunkern and Junkmail Studios in Stockholm, with the strings done at Angel Recording Studios in London, and Mikael Akerfeldt produced it. The record exists in two versions, one in Swedish and one in English, released on the same day. Akerfeldt told Blabbermouth that "the main version is the Swedish version. And the English version is the supplementary version", adding that "the Swedish version is where to start": the plan had been to put out the Swedish album alone, and he recorded an English one because he grew anxious that people would pass on a record in a language most of their listeners do not read. He also said he could not stop writing, and at 67 minutes and 57 seconds it is the longest album the band has made. It is the last record with the drummer Martin Axenrot, who left in 2021. The running order here is the English version's, and the English version is what the player carries.
