1916 is a studio album released on 18 January 1991, the band's first after leaving GWR for Epic, catalogue number 467481 2. The players are Lemmy Kilmister on bass and vocals, Phil Campbell and Würzel on guitars and Phil Taylor on drums; Peter Solley and Ed Stasium produced. Eleven tracks. The ninth, "R.A.M.O.N.E.S.", is a ninety-second tribute to the Ramones which the band returned to more than once: a re-recorded version appears on Kiss of Death and a live one on its twentieth-anniversary edition. The title track, about the dead of the First World War and carrying a cello part by James Hoskins, is among the quietest things they recorded. It reached No. 24 on the Official Albums Chart. Epic issued the Japanese pressing on 7 February 1991 as ESCA 5243.
