Biomechanicals

Biomechanicals was a fresh start in two directions at once. One was the label: the band left Inner Wound Recordings, who had put out the debut, for AFM Records in Germany. The other was the voice — this is the first Metalite album with Erica Ohlsson singing. The band has told the story of that change. Emma Bensing, who had been there from the start, became a mother in 2018 and decided she wanted her time for things other than Metalite. Finding a replacement was hard until Premberg saw Erica performing at a rock show in Stockholm, asked her to record a few songs in the studio, and found she had everything they had been looking for. He asked; she said yes. The music leans further into electronics than the debut did. Programmed rhythm and synthesised sound work their way into the frames of the songs, with anthemic choruses over the top. "Far from the Sanctuary", "Apocalypse" and "Social Butterflies" went out ahead of the album, each with a film on AFM's own channel. The band's own account of the record is that it refined the futuristic picture and combined symphonic weight with hooks. Marquee released the Japanese edition about a month later, on 20 November 2019, as MICP-11522, with "Riders of the Storm" added at track twelve as a Japan-only bonus.
