LINER NOTES
LANGUAGE
Immutable is the ninth studio album by the Swedish band Meshuggah, released on 1 April 2022 through Atomic Fire Records. It is the first of their albums not to come out on Nuclear Blast, and the digital edition appeared a day earlier.
Guitarist Marten Hagstrom explained the title directly: it fits where the band is now, he said, because they are older, most of them in their fifties, and settled into who they are -- they have experimented all along and yet have been the same since day one. He went on that the way they approach things, why they still make albums and why they still sound the way they do is immutable; that humanity is immutable too, committing the same mistakes over and over; and that they do what they do and do not change.
"The Abysmal Eye", "Light the Shortening Fuse" and "I Am That Thirst" were issued as singles before release, with videos for "The Abysmal Eye" and "Broken Cog". Metacritic averaged 83 out of 100. Thom Jurek of AllMusic wrote that the band, comfortable in their collective skin, keep expanding their reach by obliterating metal's genre boundaries. A remastered Immutable - The Indellible Edition followed on 4 April 2025 with three live tracks added. The order here is the original thirteen.
