LINER NOTES
LANGUAGE
This is the first album with rhythm guitarist Mårten Hagström and the last with bassist Peter Nordin. He left during the tour behind it, because of vertigo. Daniel Bergstrand produced, engineered and mixed it, with Fredrik Thordendal also working on the mix. Peter In De Betou mastered it at the Cutting Room in Stockholm. The cover artwork is by Stefan Gillbald and the design is the band's own. The critic Martin Popoff has written that this is the first record on which what became the definitive Meshuggah sound appears plainly — stutter-gun riffs, time signatures that upset the apple cart, and bone-breaking percussion. That combination did a great deal to bring mathcore and djent into being. Rolling Stone placed the album at number 42 in its 50 Greatest Prog Rock Albums of All Time and at number 77 in The 100 Greatest Metal Albums of All Time in 2017. The running order here is the original's as printed.
