Blabbermouth reported in April 2005, citing Terrorizer, that Mastodon had signed a worldwide deal with Warner Bros. Records. Asked about the move a month later, Bill Kelliher said the band would not change its sound, and Brann Dailor called it a big step for a group with no radio hits and no plans to write any. The album was recorded with Seattle-based producer Matt Bayles and mixed in New York by Rich Costey. Blabbermouth reported it finished on June 21, 2006; the sleeve went up on the band's own site as an interactive puzzle whose pieces had to be dragged and dropped into place. It entered the Billboard 200 at No. 32 on the chart dated September 30, 2006, and Billboard's chart history logs four weeks on the list.
