Liner Notes
Commonly called Untitled, this is an ambitious eighth album on which Korn combines low, undulating heavy riffs, electronic noise and Jonathan Davis’s earnest voice. Having no formal title, its very anonymity becomes an expression. While firmly keeping the former bouncing groove, the whole album has a sound that powerfully emphasizes a distinctive blank space and deep anxiety. Also a record from a period when the drummer changed, with more experimental content.
From the development from the opening intro to “Starting Over” and the strongly hooked popular “Evolution” to a cut like “Bitch We Got a Problem,” every song is engaging, while cuts like “Hold On” and “Kiss” convey the work’s fullness. Jonathan Davis’s emotion-baring singing powerfully drives that gloomy world. A record on which, from the strong hook of “Evolution” to the deep shading of “Hold On,” the songs convey the inner pain extremely directly. While firmly keeping the band’s unshakable core, it moves powerfully toward a more unstable, introverted place. An engaging record of Korn full of experimental spirit — a record where the band’s inquiry shines.
