LINER NOTES
LANGUAGE
KISS ended their first tour of Japan with four shows at the Nippon Budokan in April 1977, and eighteen tracks from them, recorded at the time by Eddie Kramer and now mixed afresh by him from the multitrack tapes, fill the fourth CD of this box. A live album from the tour was announced in Japan but never issued; Alive II, released in October 1977, used some of the Japanese recordings instead. The album the box celebrates, Rock and Roll Over, was KISS's fifth studio album and came out in 1976. The band recorded it in a disused theatre in Nanuet, New York, the Star Theatre; it went gold on shipment, a first for a KISS album, climbed to No. 11 on the Billboard album chart, and both "Calling Dr. Love" and "Hard Luck Woman" made the top twenty. Michael Doret drew the cover. The first two CDs hold the album twice: in its 1976 mix, which Bernie Grundman remastered from the original stereo tapes, and in Kramer's new 2026 stereo mix; Grundman mastered every disc. Disc three holds 22 unreleased recordings: nine Gene Simmons demos (five from acetates, three from cassette and the instrumental "Wicked June"), Paul Stanley's demo of "I Want Love", three demos made at Davlen Sound Studios, outtakes and alternate or extended versions of album songs, and "Queen For A Day", an instrumental never finished. The Blu-ray Audio disc carries Dolby Atmos and 5.1 mixes of both versions of the album, David Frangioni's of the 1976 mix and Kramer's of his own, with high-resolution stereo. Of the box's 130 tracks, a hundred have not been released before. Ken Sharp interviewed Stanley, Simmons, Peter Criss, Kramer and others afresh for the notes in the 104-page hardcover book, and the box adds the 1976 press kit, ticket stubs from Madison Square Garden and the Budokan, posters and more. Universal Music Japan's edition (UICY-80778), dated 6 November 2026 like the international box, puts the four CDs on SHM-CD, adds a Japanese translation of the notes with lyrics and translations, and is limited to 1,600 sets.
