Liner Notes
British Steel is the sixth album on which Judas Priest boldly pares complexity and collides riffs, beat and Rob Halford’s sharp voice at the shortest distance. The guitars of K.K. Downing and Glenn Tipton concentrate more than enough tension and bite within short phrases. A landmark that presented one complete form of heavy metal.
The overwhelming accessibility of the fist-raising “Breaking the Law” and “Living After Midnight” does not weaken the record’s weight in the least. From the marching feel of “Metal Gods” and the speed of “Rapid Fire” to the lift of “United” and the weight of “Grinder,” every song is simple and powerful. The hard riffs produce a strong drive with the minimum number of notes. Its appeal is a clear construction that values when everyone drives in and where to leave a hook, over complexity. It unites, at a high level, the strength and clarity for heavy metal to reach a larger audience. Defining the genre’s style and giving vast influence to later generations, it is a landmark heavy-metal record.
