Liner Notes
Theories of Flight is the twelfth album, on which Fates Warning combined complex rhythms, fluid guitar and introspective singing to heighten the tension of progressive metal. It was made with Ray Alder (vocals), Jim Matheos and Frank Aresti (guitar), Joey Vera (bass) and Bobby Jarzombek (drums). It is also the last album to feature Aresti. The songs change expression many times, yet do not lean excessively into technique, always keeping the flow of emotion.
On "From the Rooftops" and "Seven Stars," the contrast of quiet and motion is vividly drawn. Quiet passages have deep space, and heavy passages have sharp decisiveness. The album's appeal is not only difficulty but melody and atmosphere that stay with you the longer you listen. A highly accomplished record that answers those who want to savor mature prog metal.
