Liner Notes
No Exit is a record on which FATES WARNING balanced weight and narrative at a high level using sharp riffs, odd-meter rhythm and long development. As John Arch’s successor, Ray Alder joined as the new vocalist, and his strong, expressive voice brought the band fresh power. The songs do not proceed simply, but the flow of tension never breaks, and a firm pull dwells within the complex playing.
On “No Exit,” “Anarchy Divine,” “Silent Cries” and “In a Word,” hard riffs and intellectual construction join tightly, and Alder’s singing threads human emotion through the complex playing. And on the grand suite “The Ivory Gate of Dreams,” the band’s inquisitiveness splendidly crystallizes as a single flow within long-form development. Turning a change of vocalist into a new leap, it is an important turning point on which FATES WARNING stepped in earnest into progressive metal.
