Liner Notes
Consign to Oblivion is Epica's second album, on which they layered weighty guitars, choir and orchestral arrangements to depict grand symphonic metal. It has a lyrical world inspired by the Maya civilization, and the long suite "A New Age Dawns," which continues into later albums, begins here. This saga would continue through Design Your Universe and reach its conclusion on 2025's Aspiral. Placing more weight on orchestration and choir than the previous album, it gains a more cinematic breadth.
"Trois Vierges" features a guest appearance by Roy Khan, then vocalist of Kamelot, in a memorable duet. From the opener "Hunab K'u" to the single "Quietus" and on to the grand title track, the flow is dramatic. Simone Simons's voice grows even more soaring, intertwining with Mark Jansen's growls and solemn choir. Under Sascha Paeth's production, it is an accomplished work that further deepened Epica's stylistic beauty. It is also the only album in the band's history where Simone Simons's lyrical contributions outnumber Jansen's.
