LINER NOTES

Jus Oborn had come from death metal. Listening to Black Sabbath is what made him want to turn, and that turn is where this band starts. Their 1994 debut was made in a large, smart studio, and Oborn was unhappy with how light it sounded — as he put it, they went into a big fancy place and felt they had to do as they were told.
On this record they did the opposite. Oborn found the producer, Rolf Startin, in the Yellow Pages. Startin rebuilt the studio around the band and supplied vintage amplifiers. It was recorded at Red Dog Studios in July 1996, with Mike Hurst and Oborn himself also credited with production. Oborn later called the sound very technically inept, and said that deliberately doing things badly is extremely hard; it simply happened, and it was exactly the sound they had been trying to make.
Lee Dorrian of Rise Above Records described the songs as breaking from the traditional shape of doom metal, unpolished and chaotic. The subject matter comes from 1970s horror films, biker films and the writing of H. P. Lovecraft, and three of the songs are about leaving the Earth ahead of an environmental collapse. The band toured with Cathedral after its release. The running order here is the original's as printed.
