Liner Notes
Released on February 7, 2025, Parasomnia is DREAM THEATER’s sixteenth studio album and the first full-length studio record to feature drummer Mike Portnoy since 2009’s Black Clouds & Silver Linings. That reunion matters, but the album is not built as a nostalgia exercise. It captures five musicians reconnecting in the present tense, using a shared language that has evolved through decades of technical ambition, melodic instinct, and large-scale storytelling.
Its subject matter circles sleep disorders, dreams, consciousness, and the unstable border between reality and illusion. Yet the record does not simply sink into darkness. Sharp riffs, shifting meters, and expansive melodies turn those ideas into momentum. “Night Terror,” “A Broken Man,” and “Midnight Messiah” build tension through detailed ensemble writing, with each instrument retaining a distinct role before the arrangement locks into a unified surge. The nineteen-minute “The Shadow Man Incident” extends that approach without treating virtuosity as decoration; the complexity serves the sensation of time stretching, breaking, and reforming inside a dream.
John Petrucci’s guitar, Jordan Rudess’s keyboards, John Myung’s bass, James LaBrie’s vocals, and Portnoy’s drumming all remain sharply defined, giving the album both scale and human focus. Parasomnia does not attempt to recreate an earlier classic. Instead, it uses the band’s accumulated vocabulary to open a new chapter, joining grandeur, aggression, melody, and reflection in a record that confirms DREAM THEATER can still pull the listener fully inside its world.
