Liner Notes
Asylum is the fifth album, self-produced by Dan Donegan and Mike Wengren. Around heavy grooves and an overwhelming vocal, it sounds a dark, firm hard rock. The opening — tumbling from the intro "Remnants" into the title track "Asylum" — sets the album's weighty world. Keeping the drive of previous albums, it also increases more introspective, shaded songs.
"Another Way to Die" became a signature song with its robust riff and chorus, and "The Animal" stands out with its eerie theme and hook. On "Never Again" and "Serpentine," aggression stands out, and emotional songs like "My Child" linger. It debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200, its fifth consecutive chart-topper — a feat following Metallica and the Dave Matthews Band. It is an important record showing the band's underlying strength.
